The isolated Nags Head-based Bodie Island lighthouse was open in 1872, and today is located on the National Seashore, along with Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke Island Lighthouse. One of the two lighthouses you can climb, self-guided tours are available April through Columbus Day. Bodie is a 10-story climb with over 200 steps on narrow stairs. There is no elevator or air conditioning, so those with medical conditions are advised not to climb.
