One of three lighthouses found in the national park of the National Seashore, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is open seasonally (late April through Columbus Day) for visitors to enjoy and climb. Rising 257 steps from the ground to the balcony, narrow stairs have tight space for two-way traffic and equates to climbing a 12-story building. (No elevators are available, or air conditioning; use caution.) For something even more unique, join one of the special Full Moon Tours, which require advanced reservations for two nighttime tours on full moon nights.
