Named for Queen Elizabeth I, the queen in power when England began its first colonization in America, the gardens are not to be missed when visiting the Outer Banks. Serving as a living memorial to the lost colony, the gardens were planted in the 1950s. What began as a modest two-acre garden grew into multiple acres of gardens, scultpures, statues and engravings. Visitors will find year-round color as the year-round gardens feature a range of seasonally blooming landscapes. A newer rose garden was added in the 1970s to honor Queen Elizabeth II, and guided and self-guided tours are available. Adjacent to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Park and Lost COlony's Waterside Theatre, the gardens complete the trifecta of top attractions on Roanoke Island. Throughout the years, special events and programs are available for visitors.
