The Outer Banks beach dunes are a draw for outdoor lovers, and Jockey's Ridge State Park features the tallest sand dune on the Atlantic coastline. Facing Roanoke Sound, the 426-acre dune-filled park is popular for flying kites and watching fabulous sunsets. Hang-gliding and sandboarding are permitted, although permits and vendor tours are the best way to enjoy the dunes. A 360-foot boardwalk and visitor center with museum showcases the dune's ecology. Even those with mobility issues can enjoy the dunes by calling the park 24 hours in advance for ATV rides to the top of the dunes.
